How Fit is Your Faith?
12 Signs of An Unhealthy Fear Based-Life
By Ray Patrick
Last week we looked at fear, which is In opposition to faith. Here are a dozen reasons to know if you’re operating on fear or faith.
How fit is your faith? Do you need a spiritual check-up?
If you sense something might be wrong in your spiritual life, perhaps it's time to examine your Christian walk. Here are 12 signs of an unhealthy fear based-life.
1. Your faith is based on religious obligations and rituals. You should follow Christ because you want to, not because you have to. Your relationship with Jesus should flow naturally out of love. It is not forced or driven by Fear or guilt. (1 John 4:7-18; Hebrews 10:19-22.)
2. Your sense of security is based on others. Your accomplishments and significance is centered on others not on who you are in Christ. (1 Thessalonians 2:1-6; Ephesians 6:6-7.)
3. Your faith is based on your weakness and the fear of been destroyed. Not on God, whos will strengthen you as you walk through life's troubles, trials and painful experiences. (1 Peter 4:12-13; James 1:2-4.)
4. Your service to others is based on compulsion and a need to be recognized, not out of genuine love and concern for them. You should offer your service as a joy and a pleasure and not an obligation or a heavy burden. (Ephesians 6:6-7; Ephesians 2:8-10; Romans 12:10.)
5. You expect everyone to conform to your standards and values. Instead of their unique God given differences and individual gifts as given by Christ. You should appreciate and celebrate others and their gifts. (Romans 14; Romans 12:6; 1 Corinthians 12:4-31.)
6. You are not able to give, receive and trust, allowing others to see you—and themselves—in a state of vulnerability and imperfection. You don’t allow others to make mistakes and receive freedom and forgiveness. (1 Peter 3:8; Ephesians 4:2; Romans 14.)
7. You cannot relate to real, every day worldly people with a non-judgmental, non-legalistic attitude. (Romans 14; Matthew 7:1; Luke 6:37.)
8. You cannot thrive in an atmosphere of learning, or where freethinking is encouraged. This is because of your fear of rejection. Questions and doubts are normal. (1 Peter 2:1-3; Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 2:15; Luke 2:41-47.)
9. Everything must be black and white and extremes in your approach to the Bible, its teachings and the Christian life. No balance (Ecclesiastes 7:18; Romans 14.)
10. You feel threatened and defensive when others hold to a different opinion or perspective. You cannot agree to disagree, even with other Christians. (Titus 3:9; 1 Corinthians 12:12-25; 1 Corinthians 1:10-17.)
11. You are afraid of emotional expressions from yourself and others. Forgetting emotions are not bad, they just are. (Joel 2:12-13; Psalm 47:1; Psalm 98:4; 2 Corinthians 9:12-15.)
12. You don’t have the ability to relax and have fun. You can’t laugh at yourself and at life. Always up tight (Ecclesiastes 3:1-4; 8:15; Proverbs 17:22; Nehemiah 8:10)
